On World Press Freedom Day (3 May), PEN International will pay a tribute to journalists who have lost their lives and remember those who are targeted in the pursuit of a story. The organisation will focus on the cases of Idris Said ‘Abba Arre’ (Eritrea), Daphne Caruana Galizia (Malta), Kalúa Salazar (Nicaragua) and Maria Ressa (Philippines), and will call on PEN members to mobilise so that governments respect and protect press freedom.
We will promote the campaign on PEN International’s website and social media channels from Monday 3 May to Friday 7 May. You can plan activities on the day itself and/or during the week:
- Monday 3 May: campaign launch
- Tuesday 4 May: focus on Idris Said
- Wednesday 5 May: focus on Daphne Caruana Galizia
- Thursday 6 May: focus on Kalúa Salazar
- Friday 7 May: focus on Maria Ressa
To promote this work, PEN International created an action page, social media messages, visual materials and a toolkit summarising the campaign and providing links to available materials. Please note that all materials, which are available in English only, are EMBARGOED until 00:01 BST 3 May.
